Bike riders of all ages are invited to a “Glow Ride” through Downtown Pensacola to raise funds and awareness for an annual service project that almost didn’t happen this year.
The onbikes 2021 Winter Wonder Ride is set for Saturday, Dec. 18 in downtown Pensacola, with a post-ride celebration at Blue Wahoos Stadium that includes live music, drinks and food. The ride begins at the east gate at Blue Wahoos Stadium at 4 p.m. Registration opens at 2:30p.m. and closes at 3:45pm.
Proceeds from the event will go to the onbikes Pensacola annual effort to provide bicycles for local kids in need at the holidays.
Onbikes Pensacola almost wasn’t able to conduct the give-away this year due to the ongoing global supply chain issues. In recent years, the group has given away 500 or more bikes, but this year, only about 200 bikes became available at the last minute.
In fact, the decision to cancel this year’s give-away had already been made when a local Walmart store let organizers know that bikes would be available after all.
“We were heartbroken when we thought we weren’t going to be able to do it this year,” said Walker Wilson, who founded onbikes in 2016. “The last-minute reprieve was a godsend. We are so happy to be able to continue our mission of making sure every kid on the Gulf Coast has a bike.”
The 2021 “Bike Build” was held on Nov. 20, when dozens of volunteers gathered at the Pensacola Fairgrounds to assemble the bicycles. The bikes will be distributed to children who are in the foster care system or are otherwise identified as being in need.Onbikes has distributed bicycles, helmets and other gear to more than 2,000 children in its six years of operation.
